Aromatherapy properties: A colorless to pale yellow mobile liquid with a fresh, minty-herbaceous odor. It blends well with citronella, geranium, lavandin, lavender, rosemary, and sage oils.

Spiritual uses: As a nerve sedative, pennyroyal oil can calm anxiety and hysterical states of mind. The dried herbage or minute quantities of the oil may also be used in ceremonies of purification and rebirth, or for resolving past-life issues.

History: A tea made from the whole pennyroyal herb was recommended by Pliny to stimulate delayed menstruation, alleviate menstrual cramps, and facilitate childbirth. Pennyroyal was once a popular spice herb in European cuisine alongside thyme, marjoram, and sage, though today it is rarely used in cooking. People also believed that pennyroyal, when placed in a polluted well or other water source, could transfer its purifying properties to the water and render it fresh. Today, pennyroyal is mostly used as a fragrance in detergents and industrial perfumes.
