History: With a name derived from the Latin ros marinus, which means “dew of the sea,” Rosemary was burned in ancient Greek shrines as an incense, and was discussed by both Pliny and Dioscorides. It was a common garland at Medieval weddings, and was used medicinally for a variety of purposes throughout the Middle Ages. Rosemary was traditionally placed with corpses at funerals, and in both this instance and its use at weddings, it symbolizes remembrance. In a 2012 study, Rosemary was found to improve speed and accuracy in cognitive performance.
