History: The ravensara tree is native to Madagascar, where it’s used as a tonic and medicine for all kinds of infections. The name “ravensara” comes from a Malagasy phrase meaning “leaves that are good for you”. The seeds, often called Madagascar nutmeg, are used in cooking. Ravensara is frequently confused with ravintsara oil, which is actually derived from the species Cinnamomum camphora. True Ravensara aromatica oil was first extracted by French scientist Antoine Baume in the 18th century, and has only recently been incorporated into aromatherapy to treat viral infections and congestion. |
